This little ancient market town is located on the River Waveney about 13 ½ mile from Lowestoft and is best known for its castle which was built by Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk, to protect the town and as a rival to Henry 11’s castle at Orford.
All sorts of delights abound in this town with many individual and specialist shops, some of which have been around for generations, such as second hand books, antiques and galleries, even a real pawn brokers!
Market day occurs on a Thursday and there is a thriving farmers market every 2nd and 4th Saturday in the month and in addition the town hosts 3 special annual market day – the Spring Garden Market, the Antiques Market and the Christmas Market. Boats and canoes can be hired for river trips on the Waveney and there are many interesting walks along its banks.
