Wymondham

This Living Property area guide is designed to help anyone moving into, or anyone who has just moved into the Wymondham area. If you know of any additional information we should list - be it, services, businesses, clubs or infact anything at all we should include then please let us know.

Wymondham, confusingly pronounced "Win-dum", has so much to offer the visitor. An attractive, historic market town, its red roofs and the massive towers of the Abbey Church set against green fields and gentle slopes of the Tiffey Valley, it is the perfect place to visit. But it is also a thriving, growing community.

The A11 bypass and a town improvement scheme have greatly improved the town centre environment. Rapid growth of housing since the early 1960s has seen the urban population nearly double to over 12,000 and more homes are planned over the next few years.

While many Wymondham people now work in Norwich, commuting by car, bus or train, the town has maintained a strong employment base, providing work in a wide range of commercial enterprises. Norfolk Constabulary's headquarters is relocating to Wymondham, and further provision has been made for industrial development. Working with the Town Council and many local organisations, Wymondham Development Partnership has co-ordinated the production of a town action plan.

Wymondham still provides a centre for the local farming community, Monthly farmers' markets (3rd Saturday in the month) bring local producers and local people together, and Friday markets remind the visitor that an active, independent town life continues to thrive, despite the influence and attractions of neighbouring Norwich. Leisure activities play an increasingly important part in town life.

A fine leisure centre and swimming pool, playing fields, pitch and putt course and many active sports and social clubs and societies provide the framework for a thriving community. Annual events like the Fun Day (formerly the Carrnival), Music Festival, riverside jazz picnic and Dickensian Evening bring large numbers of visitors into town. Riverside walks have been opened up, local nature reserve designated and the Town Council is developing a large area of parkland with a new community hall at Kett's Park.

Whilst Wymondham has changed with the times, it has maintained its market town atmosphere. With an interesting history, a friendly and attractive town centre, some outstanding buildings, a good range of shops, pubs, cafés and attractive places to take a stroll in town or country surroundings, Wymondham will reward the visitor who chooses to spend a little time getting to know it.
