Thetford

This Living Property area guide is designed to help anyone moving into, or anyone who has just moved into the Thetford area. If you know of any additional information we should list - be it, services, businesses, clubs or infact anything at all we should include then please let us know.

Thetford is an ancient Market Town at one time the capital of East Anglia. It is found at the joining of the River Thet and the Little Ouse River, which run through the town. With easy access by road, bus and rail, it is situated in the south-west of Norfolk 13 miles from Attleborough and 15 miles from Diss. The town borders the large Thetford Forest Park and is within the area known as the Brecklands, a 370 square-mile chunk of pine forest and heath land extending as far as Swaffham in the north. More recently used for the filming of Dad's Army.

The Ancient House Museum is located in a 15th century timber-framed merchant's house, which was donated to the town by Duleep Singh, the last Sikh Maharajah of the Punjab, and today contains both Tourist information and local history. The Cluniac Priory ruins are in the town centre. Steam engines and agricultural machinery are exhibited in the Charles Burrell Museum located in a former paint and finishing shop.Within Thetford Forest Park is a complex of Neolithic flint mines known as Grimes Graves.

Thetford town has a variety of shops and a market. This is a popular area for families with a few hundred yards of shops including all the leading Banks and Building Societies in a pedestrianised precinct. Near at
hand to the shops is the bus station and the railway station is easily accessible - this has direct links to the north and a one stop transfer to London. Thetford also contains a wide range of restaurants and bars suitable for the family (plus gardens), historians and the serious shoppers. Street entertainment, good snacks, ice cream, hotdog vendor with barbecue flavours as well as traditional fare. The Thomas Paine Hotel, The Bell Hotel are close and close by are the Wereham and the Anchor hotels. There is a large Tesco Super Store on the outskirts of town and also the usual selection of out-of-town stores such as Halfords and DIY stores.
Parking is free and the pavements have wheelchair access in Thetford to keep the Town centre friendly and the twice weekly market alive.
